Land of Enduring Roots
The XXXIX edition of the Medieval Festival is not a simple reenactment, but an act of contemporary pietas – a way to inhabit history and nourish it day by day, preventing time from wearing it away.
“O our petty nobility of blood! [...] Truly art thou a cloak which quickly shortens, so that, if naught be added from day to day, time goes round about thee with his shears.” (Dante, Paradiso XVI): Dante reminds us that history is like a cloak worn away by time unless it’s kept alive day by day. Offagna answers this call by adding new threads to its centuries-old cloak, crowned by the walls of its fortress. With their majestic presence, these walls surround the land in a protective embrace that has endured through the centuries and stand as a tangible reminder that belonging to a place is not something static, but a vibrant heritage.
During the Festival, anyone crossing the village gates – breathing in the scent of burning wood and hearing the clash of armor – becomes more than a mere spectator: they give new voice and lifeblood to a past that, in Offagna, has never stopped being the future.

In the beginning, it was chaos: a dark abyss, the origin of all life.
In the beginning, it was black: the primal colour, the genesis of art.
In the beginning, they were lines: the origin of shapes, souls within ancestral caves, silent witnesses to the dawn of our civilization.
Yet black is also absence: of colour, of something, of someone. And from this void, an outline takes form– that of a man whose bark is hardened and weathered by time, yet whose purpose is clear and mighty. He tears his chest apart to reveal himself and unveil his soul, his origin: a world many of us know intimately, a world deeply rooted in his heart, forged by history and stone, soundness and beauty.
His heart is Offagna’s fortress, rising vibrant and alive beneath the watchful gaze of millions of stars, eternal guardians of time as it flows and is renewed.
The artwork stands as a tribute to all those who came before us: to their hands, their minds, their sweat, and their hearts. To those who were once among us and are no longer. To those who dared to imagine what did not yet exist and, through their devotion, transformed that vision into reality. To those people who are still, to this day, our enduring roots.

Offagna has been certified to be one of Italy’s most beautiful villages and, as a crown jewel of golden stone, rises among rolling hills that tumble down to the sea.
